Tell us a bit about yourself…
Our studio’s been open for about 8 years, but I’ve been piercing for a lot longer than that! I’m from Sheffield originally and I’ve always been keen to open my own business. I thought I could do it by myself, and it’s been really fun opening in my home town.
What’s your favourite thing about being based in Sheffield City Centre?
We’re right next to Devonshire Green and in the middle of the Independent Quarter. I chose to set up here because of the number of independent shops and studios based in this area, there’s always been a real mix of businesses open around here. In the last few years, it’s changed quite a bit and got a little more mainstream, a few of the shop floors are empty now which is such a shame! This part of town is so friendly though, I definitely prefer it to other areas of the city. Everyone’s got each other’s back and there’s a proper sense of community here. You get a huge mix of customers here too, we pierce people from 16-90 years old.
What’s your favourite piercing to do?
We pierce everything! I think I prefer ear projects the most, there’s a good range of ear jewellery on offer now and ear projects are easier to change up. It’s not so much dull titanium now as there’s a whole mix of metals and materials we can pierce with. We tend to get a lot of word of mouth customers here, most of our customers come for one piercing and then come back for more. We love that, it’s really nice to see our customers’ collections growing.
How was Tramlines for you this year?
Tramlines is usually really, really busy for us. When there was a stage on Devonshire Green, we were heaving. Now the main stage is at Hillsborough Park, it’s been quieter for us - we don’t pierce drunk people anyway though, so it’s worked in our favour really! There’s still always a really great atmosphere across the whole city when Tramlines weekend is on. We tend to have quieter summers and get really busy later in the year when the students are back. They end up queueing at the door, we tend to be recommended a lot by our customers and students bring their friends.
Where’s your favourite place to go in Sheffield City Centre?
It has to be Steam Yard, we spend a lot of time there! This part of the centre has a lot more independent shops, bars and places to eat which I really love. It’s not in Sheffield centre, but I really love Kelham Island too, Sheffield’s such an independent place and that area’s a big centre for independently-owned businesses.
What’s been a highlight for you over the years?
During the first year we opened, we were interviewed by Grazia magazine which was fun! They were doing a feature on independent Sheffield businesses which was a really nice thing to be a part of, it’s framed and hanging on my wall now.
