What do you like most about working and living in Sheffield?
It has to be the people - Sheffield’s just so friendly! I’ve lived in the city since I came to University, and the Browns team have become my second family. The food scene’s really good here too, places like Kommune and Cutlery Works are showing how great street food can be. There are some lovely fine dining venues cropping up around Ecclesall Road, but there’s still not as many options in the city centre, so Browns really stands out in that way.
I know I’m biased...but Browns is definitely one of my favourite places in Sheffield city centre. Our team’s so close-knit, we really are like a family, and we all love what we do. It’s the kind of place you can pop in for a nice drink, there’s space to sit and relax, and the viewpoint we have overlooking one of Sheffield’s landmarks, the Peace Gardens, is really something special.
What do you enjoy most about the early evening buzz in Sheffield?
We get really busy in the evenings, partly because we’re so close to Sheffield Theatres - that pre-show buzz is something we see a lot of here, and it’s really nice that we can cater for such a special occasion. A lot of customers come and see us in the early evening because of our set price menu, too. We offer two courses for £11.95 or three courses for £15.95 before 7pm, which is a really good deal, especially with how exciting the set menu is at the moment.
We also really benefit from being so close to the Peace Gardens. There’s always such a diverse mix of people around this part of town, we see families, school children, business workers and people just having their lunch all enjoying the city. Now it’s getting a bit warmer, our outside areas are always packed - we have a fine dining terrace as well as a drinks area, and it’s always going to be a treat to have a cocktail on the terrace outside when it’s a sunny day.
What’s been your highlight while working here?
Doc Fest last year was great, we had the ambassadors fill out the whole of the top floor for a meal. There was a whole mix of people from all over the world, and the atmosphere was amazing. As well as Doc Fest, University Graduation times are always really busy, and the Grand Prix Cycling Race last summer was definitely a highlight! The guests all came into Browns, and there was such a party mood.
I’ve got to mention Tramlines too, of course! It’s definitely the busiest and best weekend of the year. Before the main acts moved to Hillsborough Park, we had a great view of the events going on around the Peace Gardens. It wasn’t quite as hectic last year, but it’s still just the craziest weekend. Instead, now we get customers having a drink with us before they head down to Hillsborough, and then when the music’s over they come back up - we see the beginning and the end!
Are there any events coming up you’d like to shout about?
Last Wednesday, we hosted the second of our launch nights for our new spring taster menu, which includes three courses for only £20.95. At our launch night, guests were able to sample the dishes from the new menu for a discounted price. My personal favourite is the herb crusted rack of lamb, with spinach, peas, broad beans and mint.
Our latest menus really cater for vegan and vegetarian diets too. More and more of our customer base are navigating towards full vegetarianism, and we find that the more diverse our vegetarian menu is, the more younger people, including Sheffield’s huge student population, want to come and visit us. One of my favourite vegetarian dishes on our Spring Taster Menu is the vegetable pot pie - it’s absolutely delicious.
