Molly Malones is one of the newer bars on West Street, how have you found things so far?
We only opened last September and we’ve had a great time so far! West Street has Tiger Works and West Street Live for more end-of-the-night places, Molly’s is a bit more suited to the start of the night. We’ve had queues every week since we opened, and every Bank Holiday weekend we’ve had so far has been huge - we’re looking forward to summer!
What’s been a highlight of working at Molly Malones?
As you can probably guess, Paddy’s Weekend was absolutely massive for us, we had so much going on. We expected Friday night to be strong, but Saturday and Sunday night were record sales nights for us too - Sheffield didn’t disappoint! All the Bank Holidays we’ve had over the last few weeks have been really good too.
Tell us a bit about your live music bookings…
Our live music really makes us stand out, there are so many good bars on West Street, but Molly Malones is different, especially for live music, there’s nothing that really comes close. Fagan’s is a great Irish bar, but there’s nothing like us on West Street, or nothing this big in Sheffield city centre.
The bands we put on are all locals that have heard about us via word of mouth or Facebook. The owner of Molly’s goes to Dublin a lot for research, we wanted to make the place as authentic as possible. He actually built Molly’s himself too, it’s a proper Irish bar that just happens to be in the heart of Sheffield.
Who is Molly Malones most popular with?
I can’t stress how much I love Molly Malones! My parents are in their mid-60s and absolutely love Molly’s, we get all age groups and all kinds of customers, it suits everyone. Because we’re based on West Street, we get a different crowd throughout the day - Sheffield locals, students, people visiting the city - we tend to get a local crowd up until 11pm, and then it switches a bit to people heading out for the night. We’ve got guaranteed opening hours until 4am too, so we see different faces throughout the night.
Any events you want to shout about?
Our Big Fat Quiz on Tuesdays and Sundays is really popular. It’s speed quizzing, so you can play on your phone for free and there’s no faffing around with pens and paper. Our quiz host Jason is unbelievable! The quiz is really popular with students, and we’ve got a lot more wacky prizes coming up.
Look out for September, too! We’ve got loads more fun stuff coming up in time for Fresher’s Week. Our free student card gives you discounts on double house spirits and mixers, and all pints too.
